Who Was the Country's First African American Millionaire?

In 1841, William Liedesdorff arrived in San Francisco Bay on his Schooner Julia Ann. Born in the Virgin Islands around 1810, the son of an African American woman and a Danish sugar planter, Liedesdorff left home to learn the maritime trade, working on ships out of New Orleans. Already a wealthy man when he came to San Francisco, he bought land, built a home, and opened a store. He then proceeded to make a major impact on the city.
As a member of the city council, Liedesdorff was instrumental in setting up the first public school and organizing the first official and later opened the first hotel. He eventually owned an extensive amount of land in the city as well as a huge estate near Sutter's Mill, in gold-rush country. Liedesdorff died at the age of thirty-eight from what was then called "brain fever." A short street in downtown San Francisco still bears his name. Joan Potter

African Americans in Business

"The Afro American Insurance Company, the first known Insurance firm to be owned and managed by African Americans, was established in Philadelphia in 1810 by three businessmen, James Porter, William Coleman, and Joseph Randolph. The original purpose of the Company, which stayed in business for thirty years, was to provide African Americans with a proper burial." Joan Potter

Who Was The First African American Film Star Nominated For An Oscar As Best Actress?

Dorothy Dandridge started her performing career in Cleveland when she was only six years old, singing, dancing, doing acrobatics, and playing the violin with her sister, Vivian, in an act called The Wonder Children. They performed around the South for several years and in 1930 moved to Los Angeles.
After the two were joined by a third young woman , Etta Jones, to form The Dandridge Sisters, they toured the country, recording with the Jimmy Lunceford band and performing at the Cotton Club with Cab Calloway. They appeared in A Day at the Races and a few other films before the group broke up in 1940.
Dandridge continued to sing in  clubs and played a few bit parts in films.
Her big break came in 1953 when she costarred with Harry Belafonte in Bright Road, and a year later she won an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, for her role in Carmen Jones-a first for an African American actress. Dandridge's career, built on her image as a seductress, began a gradual decline. She failed at a comeback attempt in the 1960's and met her tragic end at the age of forty-three when she died in her Los Angeles apartment from an overdose of antidepressants.

Skin Color? Hosea 4:6 "My people are destroyed....." Team Debt Free Educating & Empowering

I Pray this is false?

Thailand Donates 50,000 Bottles of Whitening Skin Cream To Haiti
Abhisit hopes earthquake survivors will feel “more confident” with lighter, more radiant skin

BANGKOK – Responding to international criticism that its initial donation of $20,000 was insufficient, the Thai government has generously added 50,000 bottles of whitening skin cream to its aid shipment to earthquake-stricken Haiti.

“Thailand is a compassionate nation,” said Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya.
“We noticed in the news that the Haitians are all very dark-skinned.
This is surely one of the reasons they are living in poverty. With
lighter skin they could be more successful.”

Thedonation is co-sponsored by Unilever Thailand Ltd., which has agreed to
provide the 50,000 bottles of Citra Ultra White if the government
provides shipping. Along with the whitening cream,
there will also be 50,000 copies of Citra’s new brochure, explaining
the power of Citra’s double-action anti-aging and brightening formula.

“Citra Ultra White lets you look and feel your best,” said Marlene Van Houten,
Unilever’s regional marketing director. “Whether you’re standing in
line for UN food shipments, or just sorting through the rubble of your
devastated village, Citra Ultra White provides whiter skin and all-day
UV protection.”

The whitening cream represents the single-largest shipment of its kind ever to a disaster-zone. Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said that the generosity of Thais was evident because so many people had encouraged the donation.

“Everyone kept talking about how black-skinned the Haitians are,” he said. “At
every discussion about aid, the skin color kept coming up. I see now
that the initial pledge of USD 20,000 was very low because in the back
of our minds we knew that these black people needed something more than
just money.”

Many people interviewed for the story seemed to agree with the PM.

“I donated some money to help the Chinese after the Sichuan earthquake,”
said office worker Vasana Prasarnmit. “But these Haiti people are so
dark I don’t want to give them anything. Maybe if they were lighter,
like Obama.”

It is believed that the whitening cream can make the homeless, starving
survivors of the earthquake look whiter and brighter in just 14 days,
according to the Unilever brochure. It is hoped that by looking whiter,
the Haitians might be able to secure more aid.

“White skin is the key to success in life, whether it’s job interviews, finding a mate, or being elected to office,” said Chulalongkorn sociology professor Urmkit Srisomwattanathip. “There’s no reason to believe this is any different.”

The Haitian government has tentatively accepted the donation, but has surprisingly appealed for more non-whitening aid.

“We have nothing,” said a local Haitian aid worker with the UN. “We need
shelter, food, clean water. There are hundreds of children dying every
day from dysentery. Please help us. For god’s sake, wake up and see the
suffering.”

Unresolved Issues in Family Caregiving?

Unresolved Issues in Family Caregiving
By Kristine Dwyer, LSW and
Douglas Heck, PhD

The phone call came on a misty Sunday morning. Mary’s mother had fallen at home and was hospitalized with severe injuries. Mary and her sister were
contacted by their elderly father and a social worker
and encouraged to return home to help their aged parents
make medical decisions, straighten out financial and
legal matters, and find home care services. They were
called to be caregivers yet found themselves facing this
role with great apprehension and mixed emotions as they
considered stepping back into their parents’ lives.
Memories of a difficult childhood and stressful
relationships had led the family to years of
estrangement. At this point, they looked for guidance
and answers to the dilemma they faced.

Unfortunately, this scenario is a common one. We have often assisted caregivers with this dilemma and would like to offer
some insights to help those of you who may be facing
caregiving with great uncertainty.

First, please know that you are not alone. Many caregivers across the country find themselves having mixed feelings about caring for their parents. Some of
these emotions arise from the natural concern about how
best to provide care without adversely disrupting one’s
own busy life. However, it is also very common for
caregivers to have even stronger feelings, such as
shame, bitterness, and anger as they try to cope with
the caregiving needs of elderly parents that have caused
family issues to arise.

Our relationship with our parents may suddenly be in a state of change and as we age we are often called from our role of a child to take on a parental or
authoritative role. It is important to be aware of the
possible dangers of unresolved issues and identify the
feelings that have come forward through this situation.
This time of transition can cause strong yet dormant
emotions to surface and open old relationship wounds. If
we are not aware of these feelings, we may be at risk of
inadvertently targeting our vulnerable parents with our
anger. Sometimes, if unresolved issues and
associated strong emotions are ignored, our ability to
provide good care can become compromised. We may become
less gentle, supportive, or empathic in our care. We may
also become avoidant, or respond more slowly to our
parents’ needs. In more severe situations, angry
caregivers may unknowingly seek revenge or cause harm,
which is dangerous for both the caregiver and parents.

It is important to decide whether to try to resolve issues with parents, or leave the past alone. This can be a difficult decision, but an important one.
Admittedly, facing past issues can be very complicated
and attempts to reconcile differences may only add to
one’s own personal pain or disturb a parent’s overall
well-being. At this point you may decide to NOT try to
resolve issues, do your best to provide good care, and
develop some ways of coping with your own mixed
feelings. In many cases, this is the best choice to
make.

If you realize that your feelings will keep you from providing good care and having a positive relationship with your parents, then it may help to sit down and
directly discuss your feelings with them. In some
situations, it is better to write a letter to your
parents, followed by a discussion. In our experience,
this kind of discussion has often led to a resolution of
issues, has freed those involved from their feelings and
resulted in a much more meaningful relationship.

The act of caregiving alone can sometimes bring about the healing of emotional wounds from the past. Providing direct or indirect care for a vulnerable parent can help
bring closure to unresolved issues. Anger can
sometimes be replaced by understanding, compassion, and
perhaps forgiveness. Peacefulness can overcome
bitterness, which can then lead to a beneficial and
healthy experience for both parents and family
caregivers.

Caregiving, in spite of mixed feelings, can be accomplished successfully in several ways:

    * Accept what is. Acceptance of the current circumstances and reasonable expectations of one’s ability to be a caregiver are crucial steps.
    * Feelings and memories can intensify during the caregiving process. Be aware of your limits and seek professional assistance, such as counseling, if needed.
    * Develop healthy ways of managing your emotions. Find a release, such as a walk, a good cry, journal writing or expressing your
      frustration to a close friend.
    * Ask yourself what you are realistically willing and able to do in regards to the care of your parents, given how you feel about them.
    * Delegate other tasks and needs to those who are able to serve in the caregiving role such as other relatives, neighbors or friends,
especially if you are a long distance caregiver.
    * Seek out community resources through social services, churches, senior volunteer organizations, Area Agencies on Aging and family
      caregiver support programs.
    * Remember that asking for help is a sign of strength.

In summary, many of us find ourselves faced with mixed emotions toward providing care for our parents. These feelings
may be mild or more severe and perhaps based upon years
of past family conflicts. Whether you decide to resolve
the issues or not, providing positive care for your
parents is the goal. Many caregivers have used this time
in their lives to address difficulties which can then
hopefully lead to reconciliation, healing and a more
meaningful caregiving experience.

Vitamin B6?

WH Foods Recommendations

Those all-important vitamin B6-containing foods—include tuna, banana, spinach, garlic, bell pepper, dark green leafy vegetables, and Brussels sprouts—are critical for lowering your risk of unwanted inflammation. And if you already struggle with a chronic health problem like type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease or obesity, you are likely to need even more of these foods than you would otherwise need.

The B6-containing vegetables are easy to include in a Healthiest Way of Eating. Spinach and dark leafy greens can be added to salads or briefly cooked (and then drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with salt and pepper) for a delicious and nutritious side dish. If you quarter Brussels sprouts, they only take 5 minutes to steam!

How to Avoid Back Pain When You Drive

If you spend a lot of time behind the wheel of your car, you know that driving can be a pain in the
neck, literally, as well as a pain in the back. In this Health Alert,
Johns Hopkins provides advice to help you avoid pain and discomfort
while on the road.

If you drive for extended periods you may be at risk for back and neck
pain, sciatica, and herniated disks. However, you can make adjustments
in the way you sit to limit spine, back, and neck problems.
What's the optimal way to sit while driving? That question was
answered in a study in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological
Therapeutics. After an exhaustive review of scientific journals and
automotive engineering reports, here's what the authors recommend.
The seat back should be almost straight up at a 100-degree angle from
the floor. Your knees should be only slightly higher than your buttocks.

Your head should tilt back very slightly (only 10%). Current guidelines

recommend that the elbows rest on the armrests as you grip the wheel
with your hands in the 9 o'clock and the 3 o'clock positions (instead of

at 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions) to avoid injuring the hands if

the airbag deploys.
Here are some additional tips:
  • Make sure that your back is aligned against the back of your seat in an upright position and that your headrest is supporting the middle
    of your head.
  • Use a lumbar support pillow to make your seat more comfortable and
    to support your lower back.
  • Adjust the seat and steering wheel to a comfortable position to
    avoid reaching for the wheel.
  • Consider using cruise control for long drives. Resting both feet on
the floor provides more support for your lower back than if one foot is
    on the gas.
  • Get out of the car and stretch every 20-30 minutes, if possible.
  • If back pain flares up while you're driving, apply a cold pack to
the painful area. Wrap a small bag of ice in a towel and place it
between your lower back and the seat back. Or if it feels better,
alternate ice and heat from a disposable, portable heat pack every 15-20

    minutes.
